Kata (Form)

Kodomo no Kata (Forms of Children) – This Kata was created mainly for children who want to acquire the basics of Judo and it’s composed of 7 units and each can be followed and practiced independently. The whole kata forms a progression to approach the fundamentals of Judo practice safely. Each unit includes falling techniques (ukemi), body movements (tai-sabaki), throwing techniques (nage-waza) and pinning techniques (osaekomi-waza).

Nage no Kata (Forms of Throwing) – Three representative techniques are chosen from each of five Nage-Wazas: Te-Waza (Uki Otoshi, Seoi Nage, Kata Guruma), Koshi-Waza (Uki Goshi, Harai Goshi, Tsurikomi Goshi), Ashi-Waza (Okuri Ashi Harai, Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi, Uchimata), Ma-Sutemi-Waza (Tomoe Nage, Ura Nage, Sumi Gaeshi) and Yoko-Sutemi-Waza (Yoko Gake, Yoko Guruma, Uki Waza).

Katame no Kata (Forms of Grappling) – Five model techniques are chosen from each of three Katame-Wazas: Osaekomi-Waza (Kesa Gatame, Kata Gatame, Kami Shiho Gatame, Yoko Shiho Gatame, Kuzure Kami Shiho Gatame), Shime-Waza (Kata Juji Jime, Hadaka Jime, Okuri Eri Jime, Kata Ha Jime, Gyaku Juji Jime) and Kansetsu-Waza (Ude Garami, Ude Hishigi Juji Gatame, Ude Hishigi Ude Gatame, Ude Hishigi Hiza Gatame, Ashi Garami).

Kime no Kata (Forms of Decisive Techniques) – It consists of techniques for serious combative fight. It consists of the techniques in a kneeling position (Idori)(Ryote Dori – Two Hand Hold, Tuskkake – Stomach Punch, Suri Age – Forehead Thrust, Yoko Uchi – Side Blow, Ushiro Dori – Hold from Behind, Tsukkomi – Dagger Thrust to Stomach, Kirikomi – Downward Slash, Yoko Tsuki – Dagger Thrust to Side) and in a standing position (Tachiai)(Ryote Dori – Two Hand Hold, Sode Dori – Sleeve Grab, Tsukkake – Punch to Face, Tsuki Age – Uppercut, Suri Age – Forehead Thrust, Yoko Uchi – Side Blow, Keage – Groin Kick, Ushiro Dori – Hold from Behind, Tsukkomi – Dagger Thrust to Stomach, Kirikomi – Downward Slash, Nuki Kake – Sword Unsheathing, Kiri Oroshi – Downward Cut).

Ju no Kata (Forms of Gentleness) – This is an expressive, gymnastic composition of the methods of attack and defense in a series of slow and moderate actions. It consists of three components, Dai-ikkyo (Set 1)(Tsuki Dashi – Hand Thrust, Kata Oshi – Shoulder Push, Ryote Dori – Two Hand Hold, Kata Mawashi – Shoulder Turn, Ago Oshi – Jaw Push), Dai-nikyo (Set 2)(Kiri Oroshi – Downward Cut, Ryokata Oshi – Two Shoulder Push, Naname Uchi – Slanting Strike, Katate Dori – One Hand Hold, Katate Age – One Hand Lift) and Dai-sankyo (Set 3)(Obi Tori – Belt Grab, Mune Oshi – Chest Push, Tsuki Age – Uppercut, Uchi Oroshi – Downward Strike, Ryogan Tsuki – Strike to Both Eyes).

Kodokan Goshin-Jutsu (Forms of Kodokan Self-Defense) – This consists of an unarmed section when the person is held (Ryote Dori – Two Hand Hold, Hidari Eri Dori – Left Lapel Hold, Migi Eri Dori – Right Lapel Hold, Kataude Dori – Single Hand Hold, Ushiro Eri Dori – Collar Hold from Behind, Ushiro Jime – Choke from Behind, Kakae Dori – Seize and Hold from Behind) and at distance (Naname Uchi – Slanting Strike, Ago Tsuki – Uppercut, Gammen Tsuki – Thrust Punch to Face, Mae Geri – Front Kick, Yoko Geri – Side Kick), and a weapons section (Tsukkake – Thrust, Choku Zuki – Straight Thrust, Naname Zuki – Slanting Stab, Furi Age – Upswing against Stick, Furi Oroshi – Downswing against Stick, Morote Zuki – Two Hand Thrust against Stick, Shomen Zuke – Pistol at the Abdomen, Koshi Gamae – Pistol Held at the Side, Haimen Zuke – Pistol against the Back).

Itsutsu no Kata (Forms of Five) – These forms express the mechanism of attack and defense in an elevated way. It consists of five sequences of movements that artistically express the power of nature. 1-Demonstrates the principle that rationalized, continuous attack will bring defeat, even against a strong power. 2-Demonstrates the principle of using the energy of the opponent’s attack to defeat them, or victory through yielding. 3-Demonstrates the principle of the whirlpool, wherein the inner circle controls the outer circle. 4-Demonstrates the power of the ocean’s tide. 5-Demonstrates the principle of yielding: when unlimited energies collide with each other, one yields to avoid destroying both. The techniques were not given names.

Koshiki no Kata (Forms of Antiques) – Kano Shihan highly evaluated the forms of Kito-Ryu Jujutsu as they represent the essence of attack and defense. Therefore, he left the forms as Kodokan Koshiki no Kata, with little changes. It consists of Omote (front) techniques (Tai – Ready Posture, Yume no Uchi – Dreaming, Ryoku Hi – Strength Dodging, Mizu Guruma – Water Wheel, Mizu Nagare – Water Flow, Hiki Otoshi – Draw Drop, Ko Daore – Log Fall, Uchi Kudaki – Smashing, Tani Otoshi – Valley Drop, Kuruma Daore – Wheel Throw, Shikoro Dori – Grabbing the Neckplates, Shikoro Gaeshi – Twisting the Neckplates, Yu Dachi – Shower, Taki Otoshi – Waterfall Drop) and Ura (back) techniques (Mi Kudaki – Body Smashing, Kuruma Gaeshi – Wheel Throw, Mizu Iri – Water Plunge, Ryu Setsu – Willow Snow, Saka Otoshi – Headlong Fall, Yuki Ore – Snowbreak, Iwa Nami – Wave on the Rocks).

Seiryoku Zenyo Kokumin Taiiku no Kata (Forms of Maximum Efficiency National Physical Education) – It contains both aspects of physical education and martial arts and has forms of attack and defense. It implies Tandoku-Renshu (solo practice) consisting of Goho-Ate (five direction strikes)(Hidari Mae Naname Ate – Left Front Crossing Blow, Migi Ate – Right Side Blow, Ushiro Ate – Rear Strike, Mae Ate – Front Blow, Ue Ate – Upward Blow) O-Goho-Ate (large five direction strikes)(O Hidari Mae Naname Ate – Large Left Front Crossing Blow, O Migi Ate – Large Right Side Blow, O Ushiro Ate – Large Rear Strike, O Mae Ate – Large Front Blow, O Ue Ate – Large Upward Blow), Goho-Geri (five direction kicks)(Mae Geri – Front Kick, Ushiro Geri – Rear Kick, Hidari Mae Naname Geri – Left Front Crossing Kick, Migi Mae Naname Geri – Right Front Crossing Kick, Taka Geri – High Front Kick) and others (Kagami Migaki – Mirror Polishing, Sayu Uchi – Strike to Both Sides, Zengo Tsuki – Front Rear Strikes, Ryote Ue Tsuki – Two Hand Upward Blow, O Ryote Ue Tsuki – Large Two Hand Upward Blow, Sayu Kogo Shita Tsuki – Left Right Downward Blows, Ryote Shita Tsuki – Two Hand Downward Blow, Naname Ue Uchi – Front Side Upward Cut, Naname Shita Uchi – Front Side Downward Cut, O Naname Ue Uchi – Large Slanting Upward Cut, Ushiro Sumi Tsuki – Rear Corner Blow, Ushiro Uchi – Rear Blow, Ushiro Tsuki/Mae Shita Tsuki – Rear Downward Blows), and Sotai-Renshu (duo practice) consisting of Kime Shiki/Bujutsu Shiki (forms of decision) in a kneeling position (Idori)(Ryote Dori – Two Hand Hold, Furi Hanashi – Shaking Loose, Gyakute Dori – Reverse Two Hand Hold, Tsukkake – Stomach Punch, Kiri Gake – Head Cut) and in a standing position (Tachiai)(Tsuki Age – Uppercut, Yoko Uchi – Side Blow, Ushiro Dori – Hold from Behind, Naname Tsuki – Carotid Cut, Kiri Oroshi – Downward Cut), and finally Ju Shiki/Yawara Shiki (forms of gentleness) made up from Ju-no-Kata techniques splitted between set 1 (Tsuki Dashi, Kata Oshi, Kata Mawashi, Kiri Oroshi, Katate Dori) and set 2 (Katate Age, Obi Tori, Mune Oshi, Tsuki Age, Ryogan Tsuki).

Go no Sen no Kata (Forms of Counters) – There are three levels of combative initiative (sen): 1-Go no Sen, the “late” form of attack initiative, usually characterized as a defensive move or counteraction; 2-Sen, the attack initiative that is also defensive but launched simultaneously with the aggressor’s attack; 3-Sen-Sen no Sen, a supraliminal attack initiative, also defensive but appearing to be offensive, through which the aggressor’s attack is anticipated and “beaten to the punch” by an appropriate action. It is comprised of Ashi-Waza (O Soto Gari countered by O Soto Gari, Hiza Guruma countered by Hiza Guruma, O Uchi Gari countered by Okuri Ashi Barai, De Ashi Harai countered by De Ashi Harai, Ko Soto Gake countered by Tai Otoshi, Ko Uchi Gari countered by Sasae Tsuri Komi Ashi), Koshi-Waza (Kubi Nage countered by Ushiro Goshi, Koshi Guruma countered by Uki Goshi, Hane Goshi countered by Sasae Tsuri Komi Ashi, Harai Goshi countered by Utsuri Goshi, Uchi Mata countered by Te Guruma) and Te-Waza (Ippon Seoi countered by Sumi Gaeshi).

Go no Kata (Forms of Strength) – The techniques of this Kata demonstrate the appropriate use of strength, power, and hardness (go) as a counterbalance to the principle of yielding (ju). (Seoi Nage, Ushiro Goshi, Sukui Nage, Hidari Seoi Nage, Uki Goshi, Hadaka/Koshi Kudaki, Tobi Goshi/Uki Goshi, O Soto Otoshi, Ushiro Goshi, Kata Guruma).

Joshi Goshin Ho (Women’s Self Defense) – It was created to preserve the self-defense techniques for the women. It consists of Tai-Sabaki (Manipulative body movement keeping stable balance)(Tai no Ido-Migi Yori-Hidari Yori, Tsugi Ashi, Migi Sabaki-Hidari Sabaki, Migi Mae Sabaki-Hidari Mae Sabaki, Migi Harai-Hidari Harai, Migi Mawari-Hidari Mawari, Mae Shizume-Migi Shizume-Hidari Shizume, Migi Hiza Ate-Hidari Hiza Ate), Ridatsu-Ho (How to escape from opponent’s hand control)(Katate Tebuki Dori, Ryote Katate Dori, Shishi Gyaku Dori, Ude Kakae Dori, Ushiro Dori) and Seigo-Ho (How to defend from the opponent’s attack with counter attacking techniques)(Ude Gyaku Dori, Ushiro Eri Dori, Ushiro Kubi Himo Jime, Ushiro Dori, Kyohaku Dori).

Mifune Soen Goshin Jutsu (Mifune’s Self-Defense Method) – Kyuzo Mifune (10th Dan) developed techniques of great value, which have obvious similarities with Tenjin Shinyo-Ryu Jujutsu and Yoshin-Ryu Jujutsu. (Yoko Uchi, Tsuki Age, Ryo Tsukkake, Hadaka Jime, Uchi Kake, Keta Oshi, Oshi Fuse, Tsuki Komi, Kiri Kake, Yoko Tsuki, Uchi Kake, Tsuki Age, Yoko Uchi, Ryo Tsukkake Kamae, Suigetsu Ate, Uto Ate, Keage, Yoko Hara Keri, Mune Tori Tsukkake, Kote Hishigi, Ushiro Uwa Tori, Ushiro Shita Tori, Ushiro Eri Tori, Tsukomi, Ue Tsuki Sashi, Shita Tsuki Sashi, Jou Tsuki, Jou Tsuki Kake, Nuki Gake, Kiri Sage).

Nage Ura no Kata (Forms of Countering Throwing Techniques) – This Kata was developed by Kyuzo Mifune and focuses on counter-attacks to throwing techniques: Uki Otoshi countered by Tai Otoshi, Seoi Nage countered by Yoko Guruma, Kata Guruma countered by Sumi Gaeshi, Tai Otoshi countered by Tsuri Goshi, Obi Otoshi countered by O Guruma, Okuri Ashi Harai countered by Tsubame Gaeshi, Ko Uchi Gari countered by Hiza Guruma, O Uchi Gari countered by O Uchi Gaeshi, Sasae Tsuri Komi Ashi countered by Sumi Otoshi, Uchi Mata countered by Tai Otoshi, Hane Goshi countered by Kari Gaeshi, Harai Goshi countered by Ushiro Goshi, Hane Goshi countered by Utsuri Goshi, Uki Goshi countered by Yoko Wakare, O Goshi countered by Ippon Seoi Nage.

Katame Ura no Kata (Forms of Countering Grappling Techniques) – This Kata can be considered as a complement to Nage Ura no Kata. It was compiled by Kazuo Ito from techniques developed by other Japanese Ne-Waza experts.
