Kukishin-Ryu Dakentaijutsu (Nine Demons School of Hard Body Techniques)

The Kukishin-Ryu Dakentaijutsu includes battlefield weapons such as the sword (Bikenjutsu), the short sword (Kodachijutsu), the eyebrow blade (Bisentojutsu), the six feet staff (Rokushakubojutsu), the five feet staff (Jojutsu), the half staff (Hanbojutsu), the cross hands (Juttejutsu), the spear (Sojutsu) and the Japanese halberd (Binaginatajutsu). Also practiced, are techniques for throwing projectiles (Shuriken), armor wearing techniques, and Taijutsu (empty handed martial techniques). The Kuki family line started from Ryushin Yakushimaru, a member of the Fujiwara clan. Ryushin Yakushimaru studied Shugendo and the martial arts of Shinden Fujiwara Muso-Ryu, Kuji-Hiho and Onmyo-Do. After the battle at Kuragari-Toge, where he saved the Emperor Godaigo, the emperor changed his family name from Fujiwara to Ku-ki or literally Ku-Kami, the nine demons.

Kihon Kamae Kata/Goho no Kamae (Basic Posture Forms/Five Steps Postures)

Hira no Kamae (First Flat Posture)

In this posture, both legs are holding the body’s weight equally. The legs are posted at the width of the shoulders, knees slightly bent. Both palms are lightly put over the hip fold.

Hira Ichimonji no Kamae (Flat One Character Posture)

This posture has the arms extending to the sides, and the hands are held in knife-hand palm out. The hands themselves should be at the edge of your peripheral vision. The bottom portion is the same as Jumonji no Kamae. Some other ryu-ha reference this kamae, except the have the hands at the hips – especially when dealing with attacks with swords.

Seigan no Kamae (True Eye Posture)

The hand is more outstretched than Ichimonji no Kamae, the fingers are pointed in between the opponents eyes (this is where the name comes from) and the rear hand covers the kyusho “Uko” on the side of the neck.

Hicho no Kamae (Crane Posture)

It derives its name from the image of a crane perched. The upper portion of the body is the same as Ichimonji no Kamae. The orientation of the feet is also the same, except the heel of the lead foot is pressed into the top of the calf. The knee is pointed directly at the opponent. The posture is specifically for delivering an explosive kick.

Kosei no Kamae (Offensive Posture)

Sometimes incorrectly referred to as “Dispersing Fog Posture”, is used for immediate attack. Like Hoko no Kamae, one hand is held up except above the brow. The other hand is held in a fist around the chest. The idea of this posture is to stop a potential attack, while delivering a counter attack.
